Black-and-Red Graphic Portrait

AI photo template · from 1 photo

You as a black-and-white painted portrait, lit red from behind.

Black-and-white painted portrait of a young man with shaggy light hair, sunglasses on his head, an open black shirt over a white t-shirt and a silver pendant, a red light behind him glowing through his hair and along his shoulders on a black background

Example result. Yours is made from your own photo.

A graphic novel portrait from your photo, painted semi-realistically in black, white and grey: a neon-red light behind you glows through your hair and spills onto your shoulders and collar, one side of your face falls into deep shadow, and the background is pure black. You wear a slightly open black shirt over a plain white t-shirt, sunglasses pushed up on your head and a small silver pendant. Real skin texture and painted highlights keep your face recognizable.

How to make a black and red aesthetic profile picture

A black and red aesthetic profile picture of your own face takes one selfie in Black-and-Red Graphic Portrait: you, painted semi-realistically in black, white and grey like a graphic novel cover, with a neon-red light behind you glowing through your hair and onto your shoulders, half your face in shadow and a deep black background. A run costs 1 photo on the Free plan.

  1. Upload a clear selfie with your hair visible. The red light comes from behind you and shows best where it can glow through loose strands.
  2. Press Create (1 photo). The style, the red backlight, the outfit and the black background are fixed.
  3. Check the face at full size against your selfie: a painted style can slim or smooth a face, and that is where our runs drifted.

Why it is painted, not drawn with an outline

The first version of this template asked for clean vector rendering and a red rim light outlining the hair and shoulders. In all eight test runs on four people it came out the same way: a flat, evenly lit picture with a neon line traced around the whole figure, closer to a sticker filter than to the poster it was meant to copy. The prompt was rewritten. It now asks for a semi-realistic digital painting with real skin texture, a red light placed behind you that spills onto the hair and the shoulders, and a white light on one side that leaves the other half of the face in shadow.

Everything except the red is grey, skin included, but the skin keeps its own light or dark value from your photo. The camera is meant to sit below your chin; on our sample man it stayed at eye level, and on the woman it came from below as intended. For a color photo lit by red light instead of a painting, see the red rim light selfie.

What can you use it for?

  • A profile picture that stays readable as a small circle: one face, one color, a black ground.
  • A cover for a playlist, a stream or a music account.
  • A matching pair of avatars for two friends, each from their own selfie.

What does an example run look like?

  • AI-generated sample input: front-facing selfie of a man with shaggy bleached silver hair in a light denim jacket over a white T-shirt in a Tokyo alley with vending machines
    AI-generated sample input
Painted black-and-white portrait of a man with light shaggy hair, sunglasses on his head, lit red from behind
    Result
From the AI-generated test selfie on the left, 3rd of 4 tries: the closest likeness of all our runs, down to the mole and the earring. The camera stayed at eye level, and the red on his shoulders reads as a crisp edge.
  • AI-generated sample input: front-facing selfie of a woman with split pink and black hair and winged eyeliner in a black zip hoodie over a striped top at a skatepark
    AI-generated sample input
Painted black-and-white portrait of a woman with split light and dark hair, seen from below, lit red from behind
    Result
From the AI-generated test selfie on the left: her split hair, clips, brows and liner carried over, seen from below on pure black. Her face came out narrower than in her selfie, and her single nose stud became two rings.

How do I get a better result?

  • Leave your hair loose and a little messy. The template tousles it lightly and keeps its cut, length and hairline, and the red shows through loose strands best.
  • Don't worry about your clothes in the selfie: the open black shirt over a white tee replaces them, and the sunglasses go on top of your head.
  • Pick a selfie without heavy makeup if you want your own face: on a woman's photo the template allows natural makeup at most.

What goes wrong most often?

  • Expecting your hair color. The portrait is monochrome, so colored hair turns into shades of grey.
  • Expecting a photo. It is a painting with photo-like detail, and the brush texture shows at full size.

What you need

  • Your selfie

Close-up, daylight, one face. No filters or sunglasses.

Works well

  • Your face close to the camera, looking straight in
  • Daylight from a window in front of you
  • Only you in the frame

Avoid

  • Sunglasses, masks or hair over your eyes
  • Beauty filters and heavy edits
  • Dark rooms and photos taken from far away
