AI Halloween Photo Ideas: 13 Looks, One Photo Each (2026)

The easiest AI Halloween photos start from one selfie or pet photo: pick a look such as a medieval shoot, a pet costume or your kid's drawing as a plush monster, upload it, and the costume, makeup and set are made in about a minute. Here are 13 looks we made this way, grouped by who is in them.

By Outwow StudioExamples made

Four AI Halloween looks: a woman in a black lace veil with a sword, a Labrador vampire, a monster plush and a vampire hunter

In short

  • Dark and moody from a selfie: Black-and-White Portrait gives you a strict monochrome editorial close-up.
  • No costume at home: Medieval Photo Shoot puts you in a corset dress with a sword in a ruined cathedral.
  • Pets: Pet Halloween Costume has four costumes (pumpkin, witch, vampire, dragon) and keeps your pet's fur and markings.
  • Kids: upload their monster drawing, not their photo, and get it back as a stitched plush toy.
  • No photo at all: Film Noir Shot draws a 1940s black-and-white scene from one line of text.

We made every picture in this guide with Outwow (outwow.app) templates, from a few photos of two AI-generated sample adults (a selfie, a waist-up and a full-length shot), five sample pets and one crayon drawing. Each look used one photo. The newest Halloween looks sit together in the Halloween AI photo collection; below they are grouped by who is in the photo, with the exact template for each.

Dark romance and gothic looks from a selfie

Three templates work as gothic Halloween portraits. Only Gothic Bride is in the Halloween collection; in the other two, the lighting and the black-and-white mood do the work. Each works from one photo of your face, and each run returns one 3:4 portrait you can post as is. We show two of them below; Gothic Bride didn't pass our check, and the paragraph after the pictures says why.

What we noticed: Black-and-White Portrait kept our sample woman closest to her selfie, freckles included, though its first run turned the freckles into dark, pitted spots, so we ran it again. Double Exposure drew a side profile from a front-facing selfie. Two looks we tried did not make the list. Gothic Bride changed her face in both of our runs: gaunter and older in the first, and grey-green eyes instead of her brown ones in the second, with the rings from the top frame missing from the bottom one in both. Butterfly Shadows turned our dark-haired sample into a platinum blonde with a different face shape and nose in 3 of 3 runs, so she read as another woman, and the first run also printed a stray "36" in two corners. If likeness matters most to you, start with Black-and-White Portrait.

Fantasy and character looks

For a costume you would never build at home, use a template that invents the whole set. Medieval Photo Shoot is the viral cathedral look, Fantasy Character takes a line of text about the hero you want to be, and Action Figure of Yourself prints your name and job on a toy box. All three accept one photo; Fantasy Character works from text alone too.

Retro horror-night mood

Old film makes any costume look like a found photo from a party years ago. 90s Film Photo restyles your own picture with warm faded color, grain, direct flash and an orange date in the corner, so it works best on a photo where you already wear something dark or silly. On our daytime street photo it added the warm cast, the grain and an orange date, and left the face, the shirt and the street as they were. You in the 80s goes further and redraws your hair, clothes and street around 1985, with a red-orange date stamp.

Film Noir Shot is the odd one out, and worth knowing about for that reason: no photo is needed, you describe the scene. Type something like "a detective under a street lamp in the rain" (up to 120 characters) and you get a wide 1940s black-and-white still with hard light and deep shadows. It is a scene, not a portrait of you, so use it for an invitation or a story post rather than a profile picture.

Halloween photos of your pet

Pet Halloween Costume is the one template here built for October. Upload a close-up of your cat or dog, pick one of four costumes (pumpkin, witch, vampire or dragon) and the pet appears among candlelit jack-o'-lanterns with its own fur, face and markings. One run costs 1 photo at Standard quality. The full rundown, with tips for dark coats, is on the AI pet Halloween costume page.

One thing the template decides for you is the setting. In the three runs shown, the witch and the dragon sat on porches lined with jack-o'-lanterns, while the vampire sat indoors by candles. There is no option for it, so if you want the other one, run the same photo again. Every costume came back cute rather than scary, which is how the template is built: nothing gory, fine for a family card. It is also worth checking how the costume sits. The first runs of the witch and the dragon put the ears through the hat brim and the hood, so we tightened how the template fits hats and hoods and ran them again. A pumpkin sweater on our French bulldog never came out clean in three runs: each one left an odd shape under the sweater hem, so it isn't shown.

Two more pet templates fit a spooky week without costumes. Pet Movie Poster makes your pet the star of a blockbuster poster, with its name as the film title and a genre you pick from action, adventure, space and comedy. Pet in Character dresses it as an astronaut, a king or queen, a rock star or a chef. Neither has a Halloween option, and we would not pretend otherwise. Our golden retriever, Maple, got a jungle-temple adventure poster with a compass, an old map and a made-up tagline. Both are in pet characters and costumes.

For a pet that hates being dressed, a photo costume is the gentler option; the ASPCA's Halloween safety tips and what they mean for costumes are on the Pet Halloween Costume page.

Halloween looks from your kid's drawing

For children, the input is their drawing, not their photo (why we keep it that way). A monster in crayon is the easiest Halloween subject there is, and three templates take one phone photo of the sheet. We ran the same crayon monster through all three, so the character stays the same while the medium changes.

The plush version is also a preview if you plan to order a real sewn toy. Our guide to turning a kid's drawing into real life covers all four keepsakes, and the rest of the drawing templates are in kids' drawings.

When to make and post them

Make them in the second half of October and post in the last week. In Google Trends for the US, searches for "ai halloween" peaked in the week of October 26 last year, and "pet halloween costume" peaked the same week. Two practical reasons to start early: a pet may need a second photo if the first one is too dark, and a drawing needs daylight to photograph well.

  • Post several looks of the same person as one carousel, so the set reads as one person in different costumes.
  • Keep every slide the same shape. All the portraits and pet costumes in this guide come out 3:4, so they sit together without cropping.
  • Film Noir Shot comes out 16:9, so post it on its own or crop it for a story.
  • Save the originals: results stay for your plan's history window, then they are deleted.

Do these ideas work in ChatGPT or Gemini?

Yes, you can try any of them in a general chat app with image generation. Below are two starter prompts we wrote for that; they are short on purpose and are not the prompts our templates run. What a template adds is a fixed style that looks the same each time and, per its description, keeps the parts that must stay yours: your face in the portraits, your pet's fur and markings in the costumes.

Starter prompt: gothic lace veil portrait
Using my attached selfie, create a dark romantic portrait of me wearing a white vintage lace veil. Keep my face, eye color and hairline exactly as in the photo. Soft window light from one side, black background, film grain, shallow depth of field, vertical 3:4 frame. No text, no logos, no extra people.
Starter prompt: pet in a Halloween costume
Using the attached photo of my pet, show the same animal wearing a small witch hat and a black cape, sitting on a wooden porch between three carved jack-o'-lanterns with candles inside. Keep the fur color, markings and eye color exactly as in my photo. Warm evening light, cozy and cute rather than scary, vertical 3:4 photo.

What didn't work
Butterfly Shadows turned our dark-haired sample woman into a platinum blonde with a different face shape and nose in 3 of 3 runs, and the first run also printed the number 36 in two corners; we left it out. Gothic Bride changed her face in 2 of 2 runs (gaunter and older, then grey-green eyes instead of brown), and the French bulldog pumpkin costume left an odd shape under the sweater hem in 3 of 3 runs; neither is shown. Witch, dragon and Fantasy Character needed a third run; Medieval Photo Shoot, Black-and-White Portrait and the storybook page a second.
